And that is exactly what I did when my son was a baby and most recently my daughter. I learned and I learned quickly how to soothe a crying baby.
I hushed and hushed and I rocked and rocked, walking back and forth. Then I picked up a nursery rhyme book and sat in a rocking chair and began to rock my baby. I began singing a nursery rhyme story, out aloud. Yes, I made up a tune and I sang it over and over not realizing that I had a calm baby nestled comfortably in my arms just listening to my voice. What a potent medicine indeed! I turned the page and sang another story making up another tune and this time I developed a chorus for every story and just sang a tune. Although, my baby was fast asleep, I didn’t stop because, I enjoyed it and loved what I was doing.
There is nothing more, reassuring, to a baby or a child than the loving and soothing voice of its caregiver. Go ahead, sing this beautiful tale. There is no right or wrong tune, just make it up and I promise you happier times ahead!
